Tales of the Imaginary considers the fantasy world of race. The myth which conducts how people move, think, react and live within this fictitious narrative. In this world people of color embrace the sense of otherness and hybridity that comes with living in the United States, trapped in a time of past, present, future and the unseen world of double consciousness self-awareness and aware of the gazer. The three ancestral figures find tranquility and grasp semblances of humanity in the afterlife. The mothering vulture-like creature symbolic of guardianship and cleansing rids the earth of the vermin that defile and taint the land with filth and immorality (a type of jinn roaming the landscape). Gay pulls her imagery from imagination, various media, historical excerpts and hunting scenes from French tapestry.
