Lit Without Sherman: A Love Letter to the West End.
2019
“Lit Without Sherman” is an immersive archive installation of West End memories in the historic Victorian-esque Hammonds House Museum. Weaving together site-specific murals, custom vinyl wallpaper, and audio-visual projections. Five galleries are activated in vibrant hues to celebrate the neighborhood’s lived experiences, including the HBCU Pride Room with a commemorating mural of W.E.B. DuBose as the preeminent drum major, symbolising his groundbreaking work at Clark Atlanta University. Hand-painted silhouettes of community members along with repeated vinyl patterns of archival photographs of street scenes. In the central hall, a continuous collage of ghostly homes are hand-painted hinting at the present and a time gone by. These patterns serve as backdrops for short video clips and audio excerpts projected onto adjacent walls. Visitors hear recorded remembrances—synchronizing sound with shifting light to immerse viewers in the community’s memory.
Interior acrylic paint, 10-oz non-PVC vinyl, HD digital video projector; directional speakers; custom media player. 3,000sq ft across seven gallery rooms.
