SELECTED INSTALLATION
Metropolitan Daughters (diptych), Personal Structures, European Cultural Centre, Venice, Italy.
2022
Daughters of the Metropolitan remembers and reimagines spaces where Black girls play - past, present, and future. The installation centers a diptych that features an abstracted representation of the artist's hometown. Once populated by prominent Black-owned businesses and homes, the vibrant streets are now lost to gentrification. Daughters includes two large-scale figurative aluminum dibonds. Gay's Daughters move through the technicolor silhouette structures of the cityscape, adorned with golden wigs and sporting zebrastriped bathing suits. Some carry the forms of other girls depicted in gradient blues and pinks. The backdrop employs the symbolic power of pattern, Gay often repurposes art historical motifs.
