Looking back at family photographs taken by her grandfather, the exhibition continues Gay’s narrative involving hybrid figures. Premiering a customized toile design, Gateway to the South introduces vignettes of joy, candor, and myth along with passed-down plants, she opens a new dialogue surrounding their symbolism and place within her story. Rooted in photography and grounded in Southern tropes, a rich body of multimedia works including ceramic plates, textiles, Aluminum Dibonds and playful hybridized paintings.
